The Latin American Special Interest Group (LASIG) is seeking to recognize the academic promise of an emerging scholar or early-career individual who is emerging as a contributor to scholarship in the field of Comparative and International Education in Latin America. The Emerging Scholar Award nominee must have an earned doctorate and must be a member of CIES and LASIG.
This is the first year this award is offered, and we would like to continue to offer this opportunity for an emerging scholar in the future. An emerging scholar is defined as someone with an earned PhD or Ed.D, and in his or her first five years of an academic appointment . If you are a new or emerging scholar in the field of Comparative International Education in the context of the Latin American region who would like to self-nominate or nominate another candidate-- we encourage you to do so!
Profile of a LASIG Emerging Scholar:
The LASIG Emerging Scholar nominee must have demonstrated interest in research work that will bring a positive impact to the field of Comparative International Education, in the context of Latin America and the Caribbean. This impact may include theoretical or technical developments, conceptualizations of Comparative and International Education issues that enhance public understanding of educational development in the region, or innovative ideas that have the potential to improve the lives of broader communities. Additionally, an emerging scholar is someone who, since the completion of his or her highest degree, has had the opportunity to establish a record of research achievement.
Procedure to nominate an Emerging Scholar:
We ask the help of the CIES community to self-nominate or nominate an emerging scholar that fits the aforementioned profile. Along with the name of the scholar, nominations must include a short text (no more than 500 words) addressing, In what ways does the nominated scholar fit the profile of the LASIG Emerging Scholar? Nominations will be peer-reviewed.
Application Process:
Along with your max. 500 word nomination, submissions must include:
I. An updated CV
II. A cover letter that introduces who you are, describes your qualifications for the award, and why this award would make a financial difference?
III. A copy of your Abstract proposal along with a copy of your letter of acceptance for CIES 2024
IV. A letter of recommendation (For those in their first year of an academic appointment, the letter can be from someone who knows your research/work). -This requirement will be waived for participants applying in 2024-
V. A recent publication (within last three years) from a peer-reviewed journal. Research journal must be comparative and/or international in nature, and article must be by a single author. Articles that appeared in print in a journal or edited collection are eligible. Articles published in online, peer-reviewed journals are considered to be "in print" and are thus eligible. Additionally, articles written in part or entirely in Spanish are also eligible.
All nominations/submissions must complete this form by February 16, 2024 (The winner will be notified by March 1, 2024). The award will be presented during the Business meeting On March 13 at 2:45pm.
